"On Embodiment & Evolution"
The way he treats his body, you'd think he was renting.
- Robert Brault
Dear Friends,
Back
in the 70's I went for my first Rolfing session (a deep tissue form of
massage - or body torture - depending on your perspective) created by
Ida Rolf. After several sessions my Rolfer said to me, "Michael, you're
the only person I've ever worked on who doesn't realize he has a body."
Those were the days of non-stop coffee, cigarettes and frenetic
activity (well, stopping 1 out of 3 is not bad). Now, almost 4 decades
later I realize how accurate his assessment was. My mind had bypassed
my body, which had simply become a means of transportation for my head.
While I have slowed down, I still have those days.
Like
today, which started out all wrong! Noisy people, irritating events,
feeling angry and anxious -- nothing seemed to be working and I kept
getting more and more grouchy. I wanted to complain, blame or bite
someone's head off, but knew that would only make things worse. I
noticed that my body was tense and my breathing shallow. Perhaps, I
could find some relief by going to the body. What would happen if I
turned my attention to my breath, body awareness and movement?
Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness,
which unites your body to your thoughts.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

*Changes to Nevada City Dance Schedule / 2 Sunday Sweat Your Prayers
For some time we have been turning people away from our Sunday Sweat
Your Prayers. After hearing your thoughts on the matter I have decided
to try a 3-month trial of holding 2 weekly Sunday Sweats.
Starting October 3rd we will have an 8:30am and 10:30am Sunday gathering.
Each will start with a stillness meditation 15 minutes prior to class.
The first class will be a quieter, more spacious meditation (not
without going through all the rhythms though) the second will be our
regular full on, let it all go kind of dance and social connection. For
those hearty dancers, you are welcome to do both. Also, for this
3-month period only we will offer an additional discount to those who
buy 90-day dance cards. Instead of 5 dances for $60 we will offer you
6. For people who pay the door price of $15 you will be able to do the
second dance for only $10 for a total of $25.
I hope that this will help to reduce the crowds while providing a
quieter and more spacious dance floor for those of you in the earlier
class.
Please
join us for a magical, shamanic journey where we move with intimacy and
awareness into the innermost truth of that which never dies. As the
exponential effects of our collective ways of living on earth are felt
more and more acutely, growing awareness and courageous participation
become essential to restore balance to life on this precious little
planet. The fear of death is the mother fear of all fears (also known
as survival fears), and to recognize the eternal through the timeless
dimensions of love is the antidote to so much that ails us. Please join
us during these hallowed (lit. means to honor as holy) days and nights.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions at maniko@templeofsong.com. Hope to see you soon!
Wishing you love and happiness, now. ~ Maniko

By way of love, by way of attunement, by way of connection with the
undying spirit that lives and breathes and moves in all that is,
past/present/future, this weekend is devoted to venturing further into
the experience and meeting with the visible and invisible worlds -
dissolving the veils that appear to separate us. Through dance
invocations, tonal incantations, through song, writing and full-bodied
prayer we will cross over again and again - offering our bodies and
voices as vehicles to honor our dead ancestors and our awakened mystics
as we journey all the way to communion with 'that which never dies'.
